It is never a comfortable situation to drop a professional contract, but when a contractor isn’t successfully doing the job it is something that has to be done. That is why I want to commend the Poland selectmen for their decision to engage in an interim contract with Western Maine Economic Development Council as the town’s new economic development consultant. It was the right thing to do.

The former contractor was being paid by Poland taxpayers to help Poland businesses develop and bring new businesses to town. But, from everything I have heard from business owners, he was not doing that job effectively and our town’s economy was suffering for it.

Now that the Poland selectmen have chosen WMEDC for this position, at least temporarily, I hope that our town will find someone new who is able to take on the difficult task of economic development.
