1919 – 2013

WEST PARIS — Joseph Nasatowicz, 94, of Mexico, died Saturday, Nov. 30, at Ledgeview Living Center, with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Portland on Oct. 29, 1919, the son of Frank and Stella Nasatowicz, and graduated from Cheverus High School. He served with Company B 817th Engineering Battalion in the U.S. Army for 39 months during World War II. He was a chef in his younger years and met his wife-to-be, Jean Canwell, while working at the Barker Hotel in Oquossoc. They were married on April 10, 1948, and have had more than 65 years of happiness together. He then gained employment at Oxford Paper Mill, where he worked for 35 years.

He was a communicant of Holy Savior Parish in Rumford. At the former St. Theresa Church in Mexico, he served as lector and Eucharistic minister, administering communion to the home-bound and cooking his famous spaghetti suppers for the church benefits.

He is survived by his wife, Jean, of Mexico; his daughters, Brenda Bisson and husband, Ed, of West Bath and Andrea Bernard and husband, John, of Rumford; a son, Kevin and wife, Carol, of Rumford; five grandchildren, Brook, Jared, David, Kaly and Allison; two step-granddaughters, Heather and Michelle; and special brother-in-law, Rodney Canwell.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt “thanks” to the staff of Ledgeview Living Center and his special home care attendant, Jan Heinzen.
