PORTLAND — Portland police are on the lookout for a man they say brought a rifle into a Forest Avenue liquor store, announced that the weapon was loaded and then fled without making any demands.

According to a news release issued Monday by Portland police Lt. James Sweatt, the incident occurred on Friday at about 6:41 p.m. at the RSVP store at 887 Forest Ave.

The suspect, whose image was captured by surveillance cameras, was described by witnesses as an approximately six-foot-tall, white male in his 40s with a medium build, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, dark pants, hiking boots and “a filter-type mask over a large portion of his face.”

“The suspect made no demands, but stated his weapon was loaded,” Sweatt wrote, in part. “The suspect fled to the rear of the business and onto adjacent railroad tracks. A police [search using tracking dogs] was initiated, but no suspect was located.”

According to the Monday release, investigators are considering the incident a case of attempted armed robbery and threatening display of a firearm.

Police are urging individuals who have information about the suspect or crime to contact the department by calling 874-8584, texting the keyword “GOTCHA” plus an anonymous tip to 274637, or by submitting an anonymous tip through the police website www.portland-police.com.
