Tom Knight of Dixfield and the University of Notre Dame and Liz Wood of the University of Maine are among 201 college basketball players from across the country nominated for this year’s Allstate Good Works Team.
The honor recognizes players who combine a spirit of volunteerism and community involvement with strong performance in the classroom. Players are nominated by their respective schools and are selected by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
Two final teams of 10 will be chosen from the list of 117 men’s players and 84 women, with five players representing NCAA Division I and five more representing NCAA Divisions II and III and the NAIA.
Knight, a fifth-year senior, is averaging 5 points and just under 2 rebounds per game for the Fighting Irish. The 6-foot-10, 258-pound graduate of Dirigo High School posted career highs of 5.5 points and 3.5 rebounds and 26 blocked shots as a junior.
His field goal percentage of 52.4 through six games this season is a career best, as well.
Wood, a sophomore from Catlett, Va., started all 28 Maine games as a freshman. Her current numbers of 10.3 points and 6.6 rebounds are identical to her first-year clip, and the Black Bears already have matched their four wins from all of last season.
