FARMINGTON — Board of Selectmen Chairman Ryan Morgan announced on Friday that he would be going to Canada this week to deliver the remainder of the money from a relief fund to benefit Lac-Megantic.

The Farmington Board of Selectmen and Town Manager Richard Davis set up the relief fund after a train hauling oil rolled back into Lac-Megantic in July, killing nearly 50 people and destroying dozens of buildings.

Lac-Megantic officials were given about $32,000 from the fund in October during a concert in Farmington.

Morgan announced in a news release he would be delivering about $6,500 more. The total raised was about $38,500, he said.

“It is not going to be the only help they need, but it is a great amount that our county raised for our neighbors,” he said in the release. “I want to thank the many people that donated money, time and wishes to our neighbors. We are truly blessed to live in a place where people matter and are not just a number.”

He went on to thank state Sen. Thomas Saviello, R-Franklin, for his work and the many others who have helped.

“Once again, thank you to our fire departments as they were the first ambassadors from Maine and they represented us well,” Morgan wrote.

Several firefighters from around the county responded to help put the fire out in July.

“As we are in the begging of our holidays season, I want to thank all those involved and all of those who gave,” Morgan said. “May the rest of your year be filled with happiness and joy.”
