AUBURN — Police were searching for suspects Thursday after a school bus on Stevens Mill Road was struck by a BB and a 12-year-old girl was hit by what was believed to be a piece of glass.

The girl was startled but not seriously hurt, police said.

The bus was fired upon at about 3:15 p.m. as it dropped off students. Police arrived moments later to begin searching for the suspect. While officers interviewed potential witnesses, the School Department sent a second bus to continue the route.

According to a family member, the 12-year-old girl is a student at Fairview Elementary School and was struck in the forehead by what was believed to be a small chunk of glass. At the time, she was waiting to be dropped off at a relative’s home.

On Thursday night, the girl was at a school function and was said to be feeling fine.

“She was shocked by the whole thing,” said the girl’s grandmother. “But she’s a tough cookie.”

According to Auburn School Superintendent Katy Grondin, parents of each student on Bus 11 were notified of the incident.

Auburn police were continuing to investigate Thursday night. According to Deputy Chief Jason Moen, police plan to interview more potential witnesses Friday. Anyone with information is asked to call the police station. Officer Bernice Westleigh is heading the investigation.
