LIVERMORE FALLS — James N. Howes Sr., 86, of Leeds, died Thursday, Dec. 5, at his daughter’s home in Livermore Falls, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Lewiston on March 26, 1927, the son of Laurice Howes and Margret (Houlihan) Howes. He attended Livermore Falls High School. On Sept. 2, 1948, he married his wife of 50 years, Rose Storer; she passed away Nov. 16, 1998. He later married Sarah Burnham on July 29, 2000. Jim worked as a truck driver for Pioneer Plastics and Southern Freightways. He also worked on small engines and was the owner and operator of Jim’s Small Engine Repair in Livermore Falls since 1996.
Jim was a member of the Nazarene Church of Leeds. He enjoyed traveling the United States in his truck; as the children grew older his wife, Rose, traveled with him. He and Sarah traveled many times to Montana and spent time at their friends’ ranch; he really enjoyed the serenity of Montana. Jim also enjoyed bluegrass music and attended as many bluegrass festivals as he could.
He especially enjoyed time spent with his great-grandson, Brian, and loved to have Brian read books to him as he was falling ill. He also enjoyed the many gatherings of family and friends at his daughter’s house, where he would get to spend time with his grandchildren, Adam, Katie and Ryan. He was so proud of each of them and especially proud of his son-in-law, Craig, who spent many hours with him.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sarah Howes, of Leeds; four sons and their wives, William and Gay Howes, Doug and Serena Howes, Ron and Caroline Howes, all of Florida, and Steve and Kelly Howes of Jay; two daughters, Cathy St. Germaine of Lewiston and Sheryl Dilman and her husband, Craig, of Livermore Falls; 23 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
