NORWAY — The Board of Selectmen on Thursday night recognized a national award for Stephens Memorial Hospital.

“We’re darn lucky to have that hospital,” Selectman Bill Damon said.

Stephens Memorial was selected as a Top Hospital out of a record number of 1,324 hospitals participating in The Leapfrog Group’s annual survey.

The list included 22 Top Rural Hospitals, 55 Top Urban Hospitals and 13 Top Children’s Hospitals encompassing academic medical centers, teaching hospitals, children’s hospitals and community hospitals in rural, suburban and urban centers.

The selection of winners was based on the results of the Leapfrog Group’s annual hospital survey, which measures hospitals’ performance on patient safety and quality, focusing on three critical areas of hospital care: how patients fare, resource use and management structures to prevent errors.

This is the second time Stephens Memorial has been recognized by the group.

In other business at Thursday’s board meeting, selectmen approved an application for a liquor license and permit for a special amusement permit for Jessica Richardson doing business as Simply Eats. It also accepted a reimbursement of $388.22 from Oxford County and accepted a $100 donation to the Norway Fire Department from Shaner’s Family Restaurant in Paris.

A pole permit was approved for Sodom Road and a request to close the Town Offcie at noon on Christmas Eve was approved.
