FARMINGTON — Edith Hayes Walters, 88, of Wilton, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Franklin Memorial Hospital, with family at her bedside, on Monday, Dec. 9.
She was born in Benton on Feb. 19, 1925, the daughter of Harold and Eunice (Norton) Hayes; she was the eldest of four siblings. She graduated from Gardiner High School, continuing her education with a bachelor’s degree from Gorham State Teachers College and a master’s degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono.
She married Philip Walters on July 26, 1958, in Mount Vernon. They made their home together in Wilton, where they raised two sons. She was known for her excellent homemaking skills and wonderful cooking.

She continued her passion for teaching throughout her life, teaching Sunday school at the Wilton United Methodist Church for many years, as well as giving her time to the Literacy Volunteers of America and acting as a den mother for the Cub Scouts of America. A woman of strong faith, she was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church.
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and playing games with the youngest members of the family. She was an avid letter writer and sender of cards, careful to stay in touch with those she loved, including many West Coast relatives.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Philip; sons, Kenneth and his wife, Nancy, of Wilton and Thomas of Industry; grandchildren, DeAnna of New Sharon and Caleb of Industry; and great-grandchildren, Hunter, Summer and Dorothy. She is also survived by her sisters, Marlene and husband, Harold, of Mount Vernon and Betty and her husband, Howard, of Lyman; brother, Robert and his wife, Mietsie, of Tolland, Conn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
