1934 – 2013
GORHAM — Madeleine Yvette (Gagne) Broadhurst, of Gorham, passed away of complications from Alzheimer’s on Friday, Dec. 6.
Born in Lewiston on Feb. 1, 1934, to William and Antonia Blais Gagne, she graduated from Lewiston High School in 1952, and lived most of her life in Gorham, until her passing. Madeleine worked for Merchants Reporting Service in Windham, where she loved playing April Fool’s jokes on Peter.
Madeleine loved the beach and in her earlier years, she and her high school friends would rent a beach house for a week in Old Orchard Beach. Her children remember packing up the car during the summer and heading to Scarborough Beach. They would stay all day, sometimes waiting out the rain showers, making sure they were not going to miss any time in the sun.
In her later years, she enjoyed going to Old Orchard Beach with her friends and family. She always enjoyed walking the beach and sitting with her feet in the water. Having four children kept her very busy supporting all of their many activities throughout their high school years and beyond. After her grandchildren were born, she continued supporting all of their activities up until Alzheimer’s took this enjoyment from her. She also enjoyed traveling with friends and family to Hawaii, Seattle, Washington, Virginia, Las Vegas and Florida.
Madeleine is survived by her daughters, Julie and her husband, Malcolm Graves, Deborah and her husband, Kevin Elwell, and Lori and her husband, David Fogg; her son, Ronald and his wife, Tammy Broadhurst; and grandchildren, Kevin and Sarah Graves, Zachery, Jana and Hayden Elwell, Nicholas and Jessica Broadhurst and Colby and Morgan Fogg. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, and her brother-in-law, Raymond Levesque, of Lewiston.
Besides her parents, Madeleine was predeceased by two brothers, William and Lucien Gagne; two sisters, Dorothy Levesque and Irene Geitzen; two sister-in-laws, Theresa and Eunice Gagne; and her niece, Lucille Jordan.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Gorham House for the support and loving care they gave Maddy for the past 7 years, as well as to Beacon Hospice for their kindness and compassion.
