RUMFORD — During the rest of this month into January, the Rumford Police Department will have extra patrols out focusing on operating under the influence driving and underage drinking, thanks to grants from the Bureau of Highway Safety and Maine’s Office of Substance Abuse, Chief Stacy Carter said Friday in an email.

“We encourage people to enjoy this holiday season, but to keep our roads safe by not drinking and driving,” he said. “The Rumford Police Department reminds everyone, don’t risk it. If you plan to drive, don’t drink. Choose a sober designated driver before going out. Take a taxicab or ask a friend to drive you home. Spend the night where the activity is being held.”

As always, he said the department also encourages the reporting of impaired drivers to law enforcement, including through anonymous tips.
