PERU — Students at Dirigo Elementary School started off their busy pre-Christmas vacation week with a pajama party assembly, at which, they were able to hear Principal Swan read the classic Polar Express story.

Children in grades K-5 gathered in the gym all cozy in their favorite pajamas, some wearing their favorite character slippers and carrying their special stuffed friend and blankets. They were all eager to hear the children’s story about a boy who asks for one gift, the gift of a bell from the harness of Santa’s reindeer.

After more than 200 students were recognized for their attendance at school during the first trimester, Mrs. Arsenault’s second grade class performed a song to help motivate random acts of kindness throughout the campus.

Then it was time for students to settle in for the reading of the book.

Students listened intently as Principal Swan read the book and each time he mentioned the Polar Express a train whistle sounded, and each time the bell was referenced a faint jingling of bells could be heard in the room.

The children enjoyed the story and left with a little more excitement of what Santa was going to leave them under their tree on Christmas day.

During the assembly, Mrs. Bousquet made an announcement in regards to the Scholastic Pajama Program.
Over the last couple of months, kindergarten classes, under the organization of Mrs. Bousquet, were asked to donate a pair of pajamas as part of the Scholastic Pajama Program. For each pair of pajamas donated, Scholastic promises to also donate a book to children in need all over America.

Students collected more than 80 pairs of pajamas, which will ensure that many children will also get a book to snuggle into bed with at night courtesy of Dirigo students.

“The students did a great job,” stated Mrs. Bousquet. “It was definitely a team effort.”
