Lewiston police received a report late last night that a man was brandishing a gun at the Royal Hotel, 12 Chestnut St. An officer rushed in his cruiser car to the hotel, jumped out and went inside. He found a man with a gun, all right. There was a Christmas party there and the man had been given a toy pistol as a gift. He had been showing it off.

The Hydro-Quebec transmission line took a major step toward becoming a reality in Lewiston by winning approval Wednesday night as a conditional use from the Board of Appeals. Wednesday marked the third time Central Maine Power Co. had gone before the board to ask for the permit to run the high-voltage transmission line 10.7 miles through the city. The local part of the line, which would run from the Greene town line to the Durham border, would be a portion of the 134-mile Hydro-Quebec power line proposed to run from Canada to Pownal. The project has yet to receive state and federal approval.
