1929 – 2013

GRAY — Viola Pollard, 84, died Thursday, Dec. 19, after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 16, 1929, the daughter of Gunhild and Leon Hatch.

Viola moved with her family to Gray in the 1940s and graduated from Pennell Institute in 1947. She married Philip Pollard of Gray, on Sept. 2, 1950.

While raising three children, Viola volunteered at the local schools, Gray Public Library, Girl Scouts and assisted with local health clinics. She was a former member of the Windham Nimble Thimbles Quilt Guild, Pine Tree Quilters Guild and the New Gloucester/Gray Garden Club.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan Pollard of Gray and Nancy Titcomb of Sanford; a son, Edwin and his wife, Karen, of Monmouth; five grandchildren, James Titcomb, Sarah Titcomb, Kelly Day, Lindsay Scirica and Brittany Scirica; four great-grandchildren, Jack, Addie, Sophia, Penelope Day; two nieces, Robin Hatch and Bess Schaible of Michigan; and a cousin, Ruth Day of Connecticut.

She was predeceased by her stepfather, Anton Swanson; her husband, Phil; and her brother, Robert Hatch.

The family wishes to thank her second family, the staff at Gorham House, for all the care and love she received while residing there for eight years. They would also like to thank Beacon Hospice for the support and compassion they provided to Viola and family.
