AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine residents that want to get coverage on the federally-run health exchange by the start of the new year are rushing to get signed up.
The deadline to sign up on the exchange for coverage that kicks in on Jan. 1 is Monday. Residents can still sign up for coverage until March 31, but their coverage won’t start until later.
The federal government says that roughly 1,480 Mainers picked a plan on the exchange last month, up from about 270 in October, the first month of open enrollment. In total, about 1,750 Mainers have enrolled in the exchange, a key component of the health care law championed by President Barack Obama.
But that’s still only a fraction of the roughly 250,000 people the state has estimated could use the exchange.
