“The liquor law is the same at Christmas time as it is in July, and persons who are having liquor come legally need not have any fear that their rights will not be respected by my deputies. I was sorry to hear the report that I had given order to seize indiscriminately liquors upon their arrival at the stations. The foregoing was the statement of Sheriff Stevens. There was a report in circulation Tuesday that the special liquor squad would libel every package of liquor that came into the county whether or not they know that it was intended for personal use. The result would be that everyone would have to go into a court room to make a formal claim for the liquor.

The fate of a small building perched on the edge of the canal by the Main Street bridge is hanging in the balance. It may return it to what it once was or it may be consigned to the city’s past. The vacant and dilapidated gray wooden structure at 1 Canal St. may be repaired and become a sandwich shop. The Union Water Power Co. owns the land under the building, which for years was a restaurant and still wears the Schlitz Beer sign of its most recent reincarnation as the Knotty Pine Grill. However, the building may have to be torn down. The former grill, which also was a tavern, lies within the boundaries of Central Maine Power Co.’s $55-million hydroelectric project. Also, the Maine Department of Transportation is planning to widen the southwest corner of Main and Canal streets during a reconstruction of the Main Street Bridge planned to begin in 1990.
