100 years ago, 1913
City Treasurer Smith of Lewiston was all smiles Wednesday for Mayor Hines had dropped in long enough to sign the warrant which without the mayoralty signature had held up the salaries of the subordinate officers in spite of the decision of the law court that made their titles secure. The signing of the warrant also does away with the prospect of the city payroll going unpaid next Monday for the treasurer had declared that he would pay no more of the city accounts without a warrant. Mayor Hines gave no reason for his sudden change of heart.

50 years ago, 1963
With only one more day of mail delivery before Christmas, Lewiston-Auburn post offices have cancellation figures of 1,595,964 as compared to last year’s total at same time of the month of 1,569,348. Yesterday’s total cancellations at the Auburn Post Office were 32,358 while on the same day in 1962 the total was 7,301. A spokesman for the department said that last year, Dec. 23 fell on a Sunday which accounts for the difference. The total for the month so far Is 670,899 while last year it was 644,448.

25 years ago, 1988
The surprise decision by the Paperworkers’ union to call off its bitter 16-month strike at the International Paper Co. mill in Jay was voted the top Maine news story of 1988. The walkout by 1,200 workers ended abruptly in October after the union’s national leadership balked at efforts to extend the strike to other IP mills around the country. The dispute left a legacy of rancor in the central Maine town.
