1924 – 2013

AUBURN — Donald E. Knight, formerly of Lisbon Falls, died Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Hospice House of Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.

He was born in Camden on Aug. 9, 1924, a son of the late R. Alden and Clara (Wheeler) Knight. He was educated in Portland and attended the Portland School for the Deaf. As a young man, he worked in the logging industry and as a machinist for the Knox Woolen Mills in Camden, and later retired from Miller Industries in Lisbon Falls.

Donald enjoyed traveling across the country with his wife, Pearl. She was his true love and they spent many happy years together. They enjoyed the outdoors and going for walks hand in hand; she predeceased him in 2000.

Donald also enjoyed fishing, canoeing and kayaking. He told many stories of himself as a young boy and racing down Mt. Batte on a toboggan, skiing and ice skating. He was a true Maine outdoorsman. His favorite hobby as he got older was building, designing and flying remote-controlled airplanes, as well as dancing and playing cards. He was a whiz at Skip-Bo and cribbage.

He belonged to the Deaf Club of Maine, and spent many happy moments with his friends at meetings and social events. He also attended East Auburn Baptist Church. He was always a well-dressed man in his cowboy hat, boots and leather jacket.

He is survived by his present wife, Nancy Knight, of Georgia; a son; several grandchildren; his Aunt Pearl and Uncle Woody of Camden; and his extended family and caregivers, the Burkhardts of Lisbon Falls.

Donald was a giving and loving man, and will be sadly missed by all whose lives he touched.
