PORTLAND — Charles D. Merrill, 86, of Bethel, died Sunday, Dec. 22, at Maine Medical Center.

He was born on May 29, 1927, in Manchester, N.H., the son of Wallace and Nora (Haley) Merrill. Charles served in the U.S. Army and was a member of American Legion Posts No. 81, No. 40 and No. 8. He married Caroline Olson on Oct. 16, 1949. He owned Charlie’s Chevron Service Station in Bethel.

He loved boating, snowmobiling and restoring old cars.

Charles is survived by his wife; two daughters, Darlene Merrill of Falmouth and Judy McCaslin of Winslow; and a grandson, Derek Murphy of Winslow.

He was predeceased by three siblings, Carnelia Brown, Cornelius Merrill and Ralph Merrill; and a grandson, Nicholas Murphy.
