BELFAST (AP) — Troy’s former town clerk has been sentenced to three months in jail for stealing more than $18,000 from the community.

Kathleen Mattingly was ordered Thursday in Waldo County Superior Court to serve 90 days of a three-year sentence.

The Morning Sentinel (http://bit.ly/1ctdV8A ) reported that she pleaded guilty earlier this month to a charge of theft by unauthorized taking and has already repaid the money.

Prosecutors said the 57-year-old Mattingly’s cooperation with investigators and quick repayment played a factor in her case.

She was town treasurer from January 2012 until March. Prosecutors said she wrote checks to herself from the town and kept some of the money when residents paid bills in cash.

Her lawyer said she has serious health problems.
