Leaking gas from burst mains has caused illness in several Lewiston families in the last few days. The bursting of a main on Lowell street allowed the gas to work its way into the house nearby, by means of the sewers, and at least five people were affected. At one home, a considerable amount of food was contaminated. Early Monday morning, a family at 52 Lincoln street was nearly overcome by gas which is believed to have come from a main under the canal bridge, nearby, as there is no gas in the house.

An axiom of Christmas is that today’s tinsel becomes tomorrow’s trash. In the days following the holiday, garbage cans overflow with crushed toy boxes and once-bright wrapping paper torn and rolled into balls. But most noticeable are the barren trees that previously stood tall and glittering with lights in living rooms that now lie shedding needles at curbsides. The final resting place of the estimated 10.000 trees discarded each year in Lewiston and picked up by city garbage trucks is currently the almost-full city landfill on River Road. However, city Public Works Director Christopher Branch said on Tuesday that a couple Christmases from now the city might have a program in place to recycle the trees. “My goal is to get Lewiston actively involved in a common-sense recycling program,” Branch said.
