VERONA ISLAND (AP) — The Penobscot Narrows Bridge has reopened to traffic a day after it was closed when large chunks of ice fell off the cables and damaged cars.
The bridge that carries U.S. Route 1 over the Penobscot River and connects Verona Island to Prospect reopened Monday night after some ice was removed and engineers determined that there is no more current danger of ice falling.
However, if temperatures rise, more ice could come down. The bridge will be closed again this weekend for ice removal.
Authorities say at least five vehicles were damaged and two were totaled Sunday morning when chunks of ice, some as big as basketballs, fell from the bridge’s cables. No one was hurt.
The bridge is more than 2,100 feet long.
