LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women, a day drop-in center for women, announces its schedule of programs for the new year.

Women are invited to help start off the year by preparing and sharing a good-luck soup and cornbread meal. While enjoying the meal, the group will share ideas for the coming year. Due to the weather-related cancellation of the Christmas Party in December, there will also be a time for Christmas games, food and gifting.

A new support group begins on Jan. 6. TREM, a trauma recovery and empowerment program, offered by Health Affiliates Maine, is a 24-27 week commitment. Contact Health Affiliates at 333-3278 to register, or for more information visit www.healthaffiliatesmaine.com/find-a-group/androscoggin-county.aspx.

Other support groups that meet regularly at the center include a group that focuses on issues of weight and self-esteem on Mondays at 11:30; support for family caregivers on Tuesdays at 11:30; a weekly Al-Anon group on Wednesdays at 5:30; and The BLT group for Bisexual, Lesbian and Transgendered women and their friends or family will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30.

Wednesday afternoons each week will be dedicated to nurturing the “inner spirit” through experiences like mandala making, spiritual conversation or guided meditation. In the same vein, on Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. Raven Star will offer a class called “Reclaiming Your Magical Life” and at 12:30 the “Come Complain” group will meet. This is the time to gripe away about anything you’d like, and after getting it out of your system, like magic, learn to transform it all with a playful “attitude of gratitude.”

On Jan. 13 at 12:30, Peg Hoffman will share more about managing anger.

Two new activities are planned. Heather Flanders will teach how to use and make “Wisdom Cards” on Jan. 6 and 27 at 12:30. On Jan. 9 and 15 at 10 a.m. Dot Treadwell will teach how to draw small black-and-white designs called Zentangles.

The monthly cooking class offered by The Nutrition Center of Maine is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Jan. 22. The Writing Workshop continues to meet weekly at 10 a.m. on Mondays, and a poetry group will gather at 12:30 p.m. Jan. 14 to both read and write poetry.

The monthly clothing give-away will be on the morning of Thursday, Jan. 30 and the January birthday party is set for Friday, Jan. 24. Bonnie Rousseau will continue her new “Fitness Made Easy” class at 10 a.m. on the 21st.

The center is continually in need of donations of hygiene items which they give away. Full size, unopened basic items such as shampoo, deodorant, bar soap, toothpaste and brushes are welcomed.

The center is currently taking applications for its core volunteers called “Companions.” These women give at least a half-day weekly, the same day each week, and serve as the listening presence at the center. Companions must have a experience in chaplaincy, social work, teaching or other related fields. There are also two openings for front desk volunteers.

The center is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, with morning classes daily from 10 to 11:30 and afternoon classes from 12:30 to 1:30. On Fridays the center closes at noon. Holiday closures are New Year’s Day and Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. The full calendar of events is available at www.wisdomswomen.org.

All women are welcome and no appointments are needed. Programs are offered free of charge. Oatmeal breakfasts are available daily and the center has a shower available.
