PORTLAND — Young & Free Maine is again asking to hear from Maine musicians ages 18-25 through their Third Annual Sound Off Music Competition. Through January 27, the contest will be open to individuals, groups or artists statewide.

“This competition provides a creative and interactive way for Maine’s credit unions to reach out to young adults, while giving young musicians a way to share their talent with their peers,” John Murphy, president and CEO of the Maine Credit Union League, said. “Through Young & Free Maine, and our Spokester Lauren Reeves, we are always exploring new ways to connect with this generation, so we can better serve them. ‘Sound Off’ is another way we give Gen Y a voice.”

“Music is truly something that defines our generation,” Lauren Reeves, Maine’s Young & Free spokester, said. “’Sound Off’ is a unique opportunity for musicians to tell their story and share their passion, while fans get to weigh in by voting for their favorite.”

Sound Off entrants must be between 18-25 years of age (in the case of bands, at least one member must be an age from 18-25), and must not be under a recording contract. Entrants will submit an audio or video recording of them singing or performing original music to a special page on the Young & Free Maine website, YoungFreeMaine.com. From January 29 to February 12, the public will vote to choose the top five artists and/or bands.

A live performance audition for the finalists will take place on Friday, Feb. 21. The grand prize winner will receive a $1,000 gift certificate to Main Street Studios in Bangor. The grand prize winner will also be awarded a spot to perform live at the KahBang music festival, held in August 2014. Prizes will also be awarded to the first and second runners up.
