Lewiston’s “front-door” burglar struck again last night, hitting a bank at the Northwood Park Shopping Center. The burglar got into the Depositors Trust Co. branch office, police said, but no money was taken. It was the fifth break or attempted break discovered by police or by business establishment employees since the start of the weekend.
In the majority of instances, the burglar daringly entered through front doors. Police Lt. Lucien H. Longtin said the would-be thief at Northwood Park Shopping Center broke a door frame to gain entrance to the bank.

A Lewiston city councilor says he plans to urge the city to consider making Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday a city holiday by next year, bringing Lewiston in line with the practice followed by most Maine cities. Ward 2 City Councilor James Howaniec said Thursday he plans to bring up the issue for discussion at the City Council meeting on Tuesday. However, he said a final decision on whether the day becomes a city holiday would have to be made during contract negotiations this year between the city and labor unions its employees belong to. “I’m concerned about the possible message that Lewiston’s failure to celebrate the holiday might convey,” he said. Auburn is among Maine cities that celebrate the holiday.
