SOUTH PARIS — Laila Piirainen Doughty, 84, of South Paris, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, at her home from complications of Parkinson’s disease.
She was born in West Paris on June 30, 1929, the daughter of Finnish immigrants Antti Hermanni and Kaisa Maatta Piirainen, and graduated from Paris High School in 1947. She married Richard Earl Doughty on Sept. 12, 1953.
Laila worked at W.J. Wheeler Insurance Agency in South Paris and Riley Insurance Agency in Brunswick. She was a charter member of the Finnish-American Heritage Society in West Paris.
She is survived by her daughter, Lillian K.; and brother, Veikko, of West Paris.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Richard, on Nov. 3, 2007; sisters, Lempi Peura, Sylvia Ordway and Helka Peake; and brothers, Carl of West Paris and Toivo of South Paris.
