1938 – 2014

WEST PARIS — Wayne F. Penley, 75, of West Paris, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 14, at his home.

He was born in West Paris on July 22, 1938, the son of Eugene and Lillian Niskanen Penley, and graduated from West Paris High School. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army from 1961-63, followed by four years in the Army Reserve. Wayne worked as a finish carpenter for Emery’s Building Supply and as a mail carrier for the West Paris post office, first as a substitute and then full time.

He was a member of and had served as a trustee of West Paris Baptist Church, and was a member of the West Paris Historical Society, Wayside Cemetery Association, the Lions Club and Mollyockett Sportsman’s Club.

Carpentry was his life. He was a very accomplished tradesman, having built his home and garage, along with the surrounding buildings on the property. He took great pride in quality workmanship. In his younger years, he built three boats.

He was a member of the Uptown Cruizahs car club, Mt. Washington Valley Old Car Club and a former member of the N.H. Mazda Miata Car Club. Wayne owned a 1965 Mustang fastback named “Maude,” that was a “from the ground up” total restoration. He was seen at many car shows, always polishing Maude and winning many ribbons and trophies. He enjoyed the races at Oxford Plains and Loudon, N.H.

He and Nancy enjoyed camping on the ocean with his camper named “Kitty” and at the Fryeburg Fair, where they formed a village of camping friends. Wayne will be remembered by his family for his perfect woodpiles, his soft heart, love of animals, his creative birdhouses, stopping at the Waterwheel in New Hampshire to eat breakfast and Thanksgiving Day trips to L.L. Bean, as well as his knowledge of the Bible.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Nancy; children, William Eugene Penley and his wife, Tina, of Livermore Falls, Brian Robert Penley and his wife, Veronica, of Greenwood, K. Jay Morrison and his wife, Suzi, of Bedford, Mass., Julieann Morrison and her husband, Robert Bartell, of Peacham, Vt., and Kevin James Morrison and his wife, Terriann, of Richmond, Vt.; 10 grandchildren, Natalie Jarnis and her significant other, Seth Chapell, Nancy Jarnis and her significant other, Joe Watson, Naomi May and husband, Tom, Jamie Morrison, Karyn Penley, Jannell Waterhouse and husband, Casey, Hunter Penley, Zachery Penley, Preston Labbe and Caleb Hall; and three great-grandchildren, Connor and Gavin Morrison and Sarah Rose Waterhouse.
