LIVERMORE FALLS — Selectmen agreed Tuesday to put the sand pile for town residents and businesses at the Transfer Station and behind the Police Station.

During the December ice storm, residents were trying to get sand at the same time as the highway crew, a very dangerous situation, Town Manager Kristal Flagg told the board.

“It is a safety issue with the trucks coming and going,” she said.

The Transfer Station is open three days a week so residents could get sand there. Two loads of sand have been placed there, she said.

The sand pile that will be put behind the Police Station, near the fence to the hydro-plant, will be available at all hours. There is a light and a camera to monitor the sand being taken and the vehicles, she said.

Several people from out of town who were taking sand from the pile at the Highway Garage have been spoken to, she said.

Flagg said two commercial plowing and sanding companies have also been spoken to. One of them was taking salt from the salt shed, which is not allowed, she said.

Businesses that have property in town can use town sand for that property but cannot use town sand commercially for paying customers, she said.

Businesses and residents can take two 5-gallon buckets of sand a day, Flagg said.

Two buckets of sand a day is a lot of sand, board Chairman Bill Demaray said.

You can put up a “no trespassing” sign at the sand pile at the Highway Garage but it will need to be enforced, he said.

Flagg said police stopped five vehicles from out of town taking sand.

“It’s too bad. We’re trying to catch them when we can,” she said.

Access to the sand piles needs to be safe for the citizens and the employees, she said.

“I didn’t think that we needed to be one of those towns that doesn’t allow residents to get sand,” she said.
