1926 – 2014

TOGUS — Cleveland M. Stetson III, 87, of Oxford, died Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, after a long illness.

He was born in Portland on Sept. 6, 1926, a son of the late Cleveland and Nellie Tripp Stetson. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. He was married Jan. 21, 1947, to Mary Bertha “Betty” Conley, who predeceased him on May 30, 1995.

Cleve was a longtime resident of Lewiston and owned and operated Stetson Oil Co., until 1990, then worked as a pipe fitter at Bath Iron Works for several years.

He was a member of the former St. Patrick’s Church, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 106 and Wallace Assembly Fourth Degree of Lewiston, where he served on various chairs and committees, including the Home Trust.

Cleve enjoyed traveling and golfing, and playing cards, shuffleboard and pool with his friends at the Knights of Columbus. He especially liked woodworking as a hobby and made many fine projects for his family.

He is survived by one daughter, Carol Vaughan and husband, Jerry, of Brunswick; three sons, Stephen Stetson of Syracuse, N.Y., David Stetson and wife, Kathleen, of Oxford and John Stetson and wife, Lori, of Oxford; 12 grandchildren, Gary, Jason, Josh, Jessica, Amy, Kimberly, Jennifer, Ryan, Hiliary, Kody, Stephanie and Mandi; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Betty; a daughter, Charlene Dennette; two grandchildren, David Stetson and Taylor Dubois; a sister, Dorothy Stetson; and a brother, Harry Stetson.
