Beautiful Middle Range Pond, at the foot of Ricker Hill was the scene of much enjoyment Saturday afternoon when the Poland Driving Club with twelve horses, keen for the races, met for the second speed program of the season. Many did not believe it possible that there would be racing, owing to inclement weather. Had the day been pleasant many of the guests from the Mansion House would have entered into the sport as enthusiastic spectators. There were some surprises in store for the crowd. Some new horses were entered Saturday. S.O. Russell’s nice horse, Edward Wilkes, never looked nicer than he did on the ice that day. He was driven by C.L. Brooks and in his very first attempt on the ice came in ahead in one heat in 37 and one-quarter seconds.

Recommendations that changes be made to the Auburn Civil Service Commission have prompted city councilors to consider reviewing the charter to also tighten conflict of interest rules and possibly give themselves a raise. The review could include suggesting changes that would give the School Committee independence to enact its own budgets, or allow the council tighter control over school spending, Mayor Harry W. Woodard Jr. said Tuesday. “The council seems to want more control over the school budget,” Woodard said. But a proposal to give the school committee even more freedom, including levying its own taxes, also is being considered, he said.
