PORTLAND, Maine – The Portland Symphony Orchestra will provide fun for the whole family with its upcoming Pops! concerts featuring the 1920 silent film classic “The Mark of Zorro.” The story of adventure, intrigue, and romance will be shown on a large screen with the orchestra seated below.

The perfect date for Valentine’s Day, performances will take place at Merrill Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, and at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, conducted by PSO assistant conductor Norman Huynh.

Music for the concert was composed to accompany “The Mark of Zorro” by Rick Friend, a noted pianist who specializes in musical compositions for silent films. Friend will perform with the PSO during the concerts. He has performed his arrangements for “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Nosferatu,” and others, in addition to “The Mark of Zorro,” with orchestras around the country.

This is the first time the PSO has accompanied a silent film. The full orchestra will provide an incredible experience, reminiscent of the early days of movies when musicians were featured at screenings of silent films to portray the story through music.

“The Mark of Zorro” features actors Douglas Fairbanks and Noah Beery in the swashbuckling tale of a daring hero that captivated audiences with his similarity to Robin Hood, protecting the people of old Southern California from the corrupt colonial government of the region. The movie is a fast favorite of audiences old and new.

Tickets range from $25-$69 and are available at 207-842-0800, www.porttix.com or at 20 Myrtle St., Monday through Saturday, noon to 6 p.m.
