RANGELEY — The School Board unanimously approved adding residents Joe George and Neil King to the Building Committee at Tuesday’s meeting.
The committee will work closely with the board’s Facilities Committee in planning renovations and upgrades to the Rangeley Lakes Regional School at 43 Mendolia Road.
Superintendent Sue Pratt updated the board on work being done with the new Marzano teacher evaluation tools, which use an electronic program called I-Observation to study 41 standards or “design questions” with a rubric to score each one. The Marzano model focuses on the art and science of teaching to insure that students are fully engaged in the learning process.
Pratt also reported that the county spelling bee is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the Strong Elementary School.
Rangeley’s Intersession is on the calendar for April 16-18. Board members Bill Roy and Michelle Elliott expressed hope that parents would not use the Intersession as an extension of spring vacation.
Pratt said students should plan to use the time to show their proficiency in the hands-on activities planned for the session.
She said she has been studying the most recent New England Common Assessment Program scores released Monday and the elementary grades’ scores were more impressive than the middle school’s.
“Our third grade was miraculous,” she said. “Ninety percent of the kids scored high proficiency in math and reading.”
The Maine Learning Technology Initiative has switched to a new version of the Mac operating system called Mavericks, which has caused a few glitches with the staff’s computers. A subcommittee of the technology committee is working on a plan to bring the school in line with the state’s technology mandates.
The policy committee presented several documents for first and second readings. Approved for second reading were policies and procedures for purchasing and contracting, procurement and staff conduct; referral and pre-referral of students with disabilities; promotion, retention and acceleration of students; private school students’ access to public school co-curricular, interscholastic and extracurricular activities; and freedom of access. Third readings for all these policies were waived, passing them for admission to the policy handbook.
