RUMFORD — A Wisconsin man was sentenced to 10 years in prison last week for causing the death of a Rumford woman in a car crash in Wisconsin in 2011.

In a report published Jan. 24 by the Wheeler News Service in Wisconsin, judge William Johnston sentenced Kyle Monahan, 24, of Shullsburg, Wis., to 10 years in prison for homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, resulting in the death of Rebecca Cushman, 21, of Rumford.

Upon release, Monahan will spend an additional 10 years under supervision and will be forced to pay restitution to the victim’s survivors, “the amount of which will be determined on Feb. 25 in Lafayette County Circuit Court,” according to the Wheeler News Service story.

Two additional charges, including negligent homicide, were dropped.

Monahan was charged following a crash on Aug. 20, 2011, that killed Cushman, who was a passenger in Monahan’s 2001 Saab, according to a previous report in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Cushman was born in Lewiston and went to school in Mexico, graduating from Mountain Valley High School in Rumford in 2008. She had been living in Chicago, where she worked as a nanny.

The report from the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department said Monahan was driving just outside of Shullsburg at a high speed when the car left the road and traveled some distance before hitting a creek embankment and rolling over numerous times.

Both occupants, who were not wearing seat belts, were ejected from the vehicle.

Cushman was pronounced dead at the scene, while Monahan was transported to a Rockford hospital by medical helicopter.

A news release from the Wisconsin Department of Justice said Michele Cushman, the mother of Rebecca Cushman, provided victim impact statements to the court.
