AUGUSTA (AP) — Maine is giving more than $100,000 to municipalities, educational institutions and non-profit groups to help them develop community forestry programs.

The grants will support tree planting and maintenance projects, as well as planning and educational projects like efforts to boost awareness about the benefits of trees and forests. Among the grant winners are the towns of Camden and Topsham and the Alna Volunteer Fire Department.

The grants are being made available through the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s community forestry program, Project Canopy. The program is funded through the USDA and all of the grant recipients will put a 50% match toward the projects.
