LEWISTON — Police arrested a 25-year-old transient Friday and charged him with beating a woman with a brick in a Park Street apartment building Wednesday night.

Jamie Brown, believed to be from out of state, was arrested on charges of elevated aggravated assault and robbery.

The victim, a 22-year-old woman who had come to Lewiston from Augusta, was treated at Central Maine Medical Center for head injuries. She was released from the hospital after undergoing surgery, police said.

A person familiar with the assault said the 22-year-old had met Brown late Wednesday night at the bus station on Bates Street. Since the buses were no longer coming, she said, Brown convinced the woman to return to 139 Park St. with him so they could sleep in the basement until morning.

According to the source, the situation turned violent when the 22-year-old refused to engage in sex acts with Brown. Police said Brown beat the woman in the head with a brick before stealing items from her and leaving her for dead.

The woman later roused and made her way to the hospital, police said. Meanwhile, a resident at 139 Park St. found a pool of blood and a brick at the scene of the attack and called police.

An investigation began and the search was on for the suspect. Police found him at Lisbon and Pine streets, just a block from the scene of the attack.

Brown, on Friday, was being held on $50,000 cash bail at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.
