RUMFORD — Budget work got underway in earnest Thursday as department heads met with Town Manager John Madigan to discuss their proposals, Terri Palmer, executive secretary, said Thursday afternoon.

According to the budget schedule, initiated article requests are due at the town manager’s office by Tuesday, Feb. 18.

Selectmen will receive budget books from the town manager’s office on Wednesday, Feb. 26.

All budget meetings, unless otherwise noted, will be held at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building’s Rumford Falls Auditorium.

Selectmen and the Finance Committee will hold workshops with department heads on Feb. 26 and Feb. 27. March and April are public hearing months for both groups.

Selectmen are scheduled to hold public hearings and votes on:

* Department budgets on Thursday, March 6, and Thursday, March 13.

* Initiated article requests on Monday, March 17, and Monday, March 24.

The Finance Committee will receive budget books from selectmen on Monday, March 31.

The committee will convene its public hearings and votes on department budgets on Monday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 9. The committee will convene its last public hearing and votes Thursday, April 10, on the initiated article requests.

Selectmen will convene two public hearings to handle ordinance requests on Monday, April 14, and Monday, April 21.

The town manager is to receive budget recommendations from the Finance Committee on Tuesday, April 15.

Barring any changes during the process, selectmen will approve the annual town meeting warrant at their regular meeting on Thursday, May 1. Selectmen and the Finance Committee will hold a joint public hearing before the regular selectmen meeting Thursday, May 15, for budget and warrant articles.

The annual town business meeting and a public hearing for budget and warrant articles is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, June 2.

Because the meeting is not an open town meeting, voting on all articles and municipal elections are done at what’s called the annual town secret poll meeting. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10, at the American Legion Hall.
