LEWISTON — Gray-New Gloucester’s Will Shafer won event state titles in the 800-meter run and the mile Monday at the Class B state indoor track championships at Bates College.

The senior won the 800 in 2:02.78, and claimed the mile in 4:20.38. The Patriots’ boys’ squad finished eighth overall with 24 points.

Waterville swept both meets. The boys’ team claimed victory with 60 points followed by York with 41 and MDI with 37. Belfast (33) and Cape Elizabeth (29) rounded out the top five.

Poland placed 15th with 18 points while Lisbon was 21st with 3.

In the girls’ meet, Waterville won with 90 points followed by Greely with 64.50. York was third at 37 with Freeport in fourth with 33. Lake Region and Ellsworth tied for fifth with 30.

Winthrop finished 19th with six points while Poland was 25th with 2.5 points.

Also placing for the Gray-NG boys was Adam Dumas in the 400. The junior placed fourth with a time of 53.95.

Poland had a winner in the long jump. Senior Matthew Rabasco jumped 20-07.25 to take the top spot. Rabasco also finished seventh in the 55 meter dash in 6.98.

Also for the Knights, senior Dan Bernier finished seventh in the pole vault with a height of 9-06. Junior Tony Benedict was fifth in the shot put with a distance of 42-05.50. Junior Cody Kostro was sixth in the high jump with a height of 5-08. The 4×200 relay team of Evan Gallagher, Will Bernier, Rabasco and Tom Flint placed sixth in 1:41.22.

Lisbon got its points from sophomore Nicholas Harriman in the mile. He ran the race in 4:52.47.

In the girls’ meet, Winthrop’s Rachel Ingram finished third in the triple jump. The senior landed a leap of 33-03. Poland got its points from junior Hope Kohtala with a fifth in the high jump with a height of 5-0.

Also in the girls’ meet, Lake Region’s Kate Hall broke a handful of records. She set a new long jump mark with a leap of 19-03.75. The previous mark was 17-11.5.  She also broke the state mark in the 55-meter dash with both her prelim and finals times. She ran the prelim in 7.11 and had a final in 7.05. The previous record was 7.13. She also broke the 200-meter record with a time of 25.36. The previous mark was 25.62.
