MADISON — A father and son were taken to a local hospital Wednesday morning after a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Route 148 and Ward Hill Road, police said.

Jon Bachelder, 42, of Readfield, who was driving a delivery van northbound on Ward Hill Road, apparently got his shoelaces caught on the van’s gas pedal and could not stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Ward Hill Road and Route 148, Madison police Sgt. David Trask said.

“He couldn’t get his foot dislodged,” said Trask.

Bachelder’s vehicle went through the stop sign and collided with a pickup truck driven by Daniel Weese, 46, of Athens, the sergeant said. Daniel’s father, David, 71, also of Athens, was a passenger in the truck.

The Weeses were heading westbound on Route 148, which has no stop sign at the intersection, when the accident occurred, according to Trask.

The impact caused the pickup to roll onto its side and then back onto its wheels, according to Trask. A small fire started in the truck, but Bachelder had a fire extinguisher in his vehicle and was able to douse it quickly, Trask said.

The Weeses suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening and were transported to Redington-Fairview Hospital in Skowhegan for treatment, Trask said. Bachelder was not injured but was summoned for running a stop sign.

“It could’ve been considerably worse,” said Trask, who noted all three men were wearing seat belts. “(Bachelder) did everything he could to get stopped. He saw the stop sign, he just couldn’t get to the brake in time.”

Bachelder’s vehicle was damaged but not demolished, and the Weeses’ pickup was totaled.
