LEWISTON — “The Andy Valley Successful Farmer” workshop series will be held beginning March 5. New and veteran farmers are invited to attend all five sessions or may choose any that apply to current needs.

Four sessions are planned for each Wednesday in March from 6 to 9 p.m. with registration beginning at 5:45. The fifth all-day session is planned for May 6. Registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. and this session will end by 3 p.m.

The March 5 workshop will share ways to enhance vegetable and small fruit production.

The March 12 session will be on soil nutrients needed for a good crop production. Identifying and controlling pests and disease will be the topic on March 19.

Questions about organic production and becoming a certified organic farm will be answered on March 26.

Help determining which irrigation is best for field or high tunnel production will be offered at the all-day session on May 6. The classroom session will be followed with a time for lunch (participants bring their own). After lunch there will be an on-site tour of irrigation systems at Six River Farm in Bowdoinham. For this session the day will begin at the UM Cooperative Extension Office, 24 Main St., Lisbon Falls.

Advanced registration is required. Workshop flyer and registration form can be found at www.androscogginswcd.org or call Jane Heikkinen at 207-753-9400, ext. 400. Cost for each workshop session is $15 per person or a discounted price of $50 each person for the whole series. Registration fees must be received five days before the session.

A minimum registration of 10 people is required with a maximum of 35 seats being available. If an emergency prevents attendance, a substitute representative from the farm is allowed. Scholarships are available for a second person from the farm to attend for free. Call Jane for scholarship details.

The registration fee is used to cover costs for refreshments and handouts. No refunds will be issued for just not showing up or not giving notice three days before the session.
