EMBDEN (AP) — Police said a 22-year-old woman was killed and three others injured in a head-on crash in Embden.

The Somerset County Sheriff’s Department identified the victim as 22-year-old Jennifer Nile of Embden, a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the crash on Route 16 at about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police said Nile was in a car driven by 24-year-old Mark Schobel of North Anson, who tried to pass another eastbound vehicle, and collided with a westbound car driven by 67-year-old Leon Souweine of Bangor. Nile was pronounced dead at the scene.

Schobel, Souweine and his passenger, his wife Ruth, all required hospitalization.

Both vehicles were totaled.

The crash remains under investigation but police said speed appears to be a factor.
