MEXICO — The Mexico Congregational Church, United Church of Christ (the “Green Church”), 163 Main St., will host a World Day of Prayer service at 2 p.m. Friday, March 7.

World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer and action each year on the first Friday in March.

Each year a different country serves as the writer of the World Day of Prayer worship service, interpreting the Bible in their own context, and lifting up issues of mission, justice and peace that are important to them.

Offerings collected during the services are granted by WDP national committees to nonprofit organizations that deal with the issues identified by the writer country. The WDP motto is “Informed prayer, prayerful action.”

The theme for this year’s World Day of Prayer service is “Streams in the Desert.” The service has been prepared by Christian women who form Egypt’s WDP committee. In exploring the story of Jesus’ conversation with a Samaritan woman at the well, the women of Egypt call us to bridge those things that divide us and to find unexpected results. Even as political changes and unrest continue to unfold in Egypt, Christian women there are hopeful that, with the majority of their brothers and sisters from the moderate Islamic community, Egypt will be rebuilt and its democratic aspirations will be realized.

Area church choir members are invited to participate in the ecumenical choir that will lead the singing for the service. The choir will rehearse at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 4. The rehearsal for readers from the various churches will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 4.

Everyone is invited to attend the service on March 7. Light refreshments will be served by the Women’s Fellowship of the church in the dining room after the service.
