Ash Wednesday in Kennedy Park

LEWISTON — On Ash Wednesday morning, March 5, at 8:30, Rev. Casey Collins of Calvary United Methodist Church and interfaith chaplain Pat Hunter Gardiner will be present in Kennedy Park to offer ashes and prayers to anyone who wishes to receive them.

Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent preceding Easter. All are invited to stop briefly and partake of this ritual.

Collins and Gardiner will be near the Pine and Park street corner of the park across from the Sun Journal building until all have been served.

Androscoggin Pomona meets March 5

POLAND — Androscoggin Pomona No. 1 will meet on Wednesday, March 5, at Excelsior Grange No. 5 on Harris Hill Road. There will be Family Health and Hearing Program presented by Shirley Hatch, chairperson of that committee.

A 50/50 raffle will be held along with the attendance drawing. There will be a 6:30 p.m. supper for $5 and a 7:30 p.m. meeting.

Three-part seminar on ‘Planet in Distress’

LEWISTON — A three-part seminar on “Planet in Distress” will be held March 7 and 8 at The Ark, 791 Lisbon St.

What is the link between Bible prophecy and the marked increase the world is seeing in floods, fires, hurricanes and other disasters? Find out what started the decline of the earth, how it will all end and what the Bible says will happen next.

Part 1, “In the Beginning,” will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 7.

Part 3, “How To Prepare For What Is At Hand,” is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, March 8.

Knights plan bean, casserole supper

LISBON FALLS — The Knights of Columbus will hold a baked bean and casserole supper from 4:45 to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Holy Trinity Church Parish Hall, 67 Frost Hill Ave.

Square Dance Club plans March 8 dance

PARIS — The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club will hold a dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Oxford Hills Middle School cafeteria, 100 Pine St.

After a long winter of dance cancellations it is time to celebrate spring. Walt Bull will be the caller of mainstream and plus level dances and Carol Stewart Arsenault will cue the round dancing.

Refreshments will be served at intermission. Door prizes and 50/50 drawing will take place during this period.

Admission is $6 per person. Non-dancers are invited to watch at no charge.

IHM Golden Age Club to meet March 11

AUBURN — IHM Golden Age Club will resume monthly meetings on Tuesday, March 11.

The group will hold its Irish boiled dinner. Cost is $5.

Social hour with cribbage, backgammon and other games will be available from 11 a.m. to noon.

AUBURN — The Auburn Art Club will meet at 2 p.m. Monday, March 10, at the Park Avenue Methodist Church. Jane Norris will chair this committee and will be assisted by Benita Flynn and Beverly Preble.

Mark Poulin, the manager of Day’s Jewelry Store in Auburn, will be the speaker. Poulin attended Colby College in Waterville and then entered the field of corporate, retail and management. He and his family live in Auburn. He will discuss fine jewelry.

Members are reminded to sign up for the Annual Meeting luncheon to be held at the Central Maine Community College Culinary Arts Center on Tuesday, April 1. Louise Reynolds will be accepting reservations and money – $10 for chicken and $12 for fish.

LEWISTON — The Lewiston Senior Citizens Cribbage League winners at the Lewiston Memorial Armory on Feb. 27 were: first, Val Asselin and Don Maillette; second, Aaron Burke and David Marshall; third, George Bussiere; fourth, Edith Chambers and Roland Bosse; fifth, Gil Cote and Richard Champagne.

Fuel Assistance Campaign continues

MONMOUTH — The Families Helping Families Fuel Assistance Campaign is extended through March because of the very cold weather and community need.

The Sea Star quilt is on display at the Town Office with tickets, envelopes and information there.

The goal is 100 tickets sold at $4 each, about the price of one gallon of fuel, to make an extra 100 gallons of fuel for any family in need as winter is still upon us.

Drawing will be on March 30 at the community supper.

A check may be sent directly to the Town of Monmouth Fuel Assistance, P.O. Box 270, with a request for quilt tickets.

Retired educators meet March 12

AUBURN — The March meeting of Androscoggin Retired Educators Association will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12, at the Park Avenue Methodist Church. The speaker will be Shannon Coffin from the Good Shepherd Food-Bank.

Lunch will be served following the meeting. The cost of lunch is $10.

Members are invited to bring a nonperishable food item which will be donated to a local food pantry. In addition, members should bring their volunteer hours. The calendar year for volunteer hours runs from April 1, 2013, through March 31, 2014.
