NEWRY — Voters approved an $829,475 municipal budget Monday night, Town Administrator Loretta Powers said.

The town meeting at the Grange Hall was one of the “most well-attended meetings that Newry has had in years,” she said. More than 100 people attended.

All 42 articles on the warrant were approved, including taking $200,000 from the capital improvement account to pave Skiway and Monkey Brook roads.

Voters approved taking $35,000 from the capital improvement account to pay for engineering of the Letter S section of Sunday River Road, and $35,000 for Grange Hall maintenance, including $9,000 for furnace replacement and $3,500 to repair chimney leaks.

Powers said voters approved a 2 percent discount on taxes paid within 30 days of billing. Selectmen recommended against passage.

“People like that discount,” Powers said. “Some people at the meeting said that it’s a good initiative for residents to pay their taxes on time.”

Voters re-elected Selectman Wendy Hanscom to a three-year term and SAD 44 Director Bonnie Largess for three years.

Sue Milligan was elected dog officer, succeeding Alan Fleet who held the position for 30 years and did not seek re-election.
