FARMINGTON — Once again, the Good Shepherd Food-Bank food mobile will visit the local pantry, bringing 7,000 pounds of products for needy people in the Farmington area.

The distribution will be from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 12, at the Care and Share Food Closet at 508 Fairbanks Road.

“Anyone in need of emergency food assistance in Farmington and the surrounding area is welcome to attend,” Carolyn McLaughlin, volunteer coordinator at Care and Share read from a notice sent by the Auburn food bank.

No records are kept of those who attend, she said. People are asked to bring their own reusable bags.

The food mobile offerings may include bread, frozen meat and canned vegetables and fruit, she said. There have also been grapes, cucumbers and other fresh produce. It depends on what they have on hand, she said.

The delivery is made possibly by Dead River Co., which has offered to provide volunteers to help, McLaughlin said. With corporate sponsors who help with costs associated with the distribution, the food closet is able to hold a couple of free distributions a year, she said.

The food mobile program provides for “communities whose demand for emergency and supplemental food has outgrown the capacity of local food pantries,” according to a Good Shepherd news release.

The Care and Share Food Closet, a program of the Farmington Area Ecumenical Ministry, has been busy this winter, McLaughlin said Thursday. More than 700 families a month are being served. The pantry is open two hours a day, Monday through Friday.

The pantry has supplies now, she said. Last week, a shipment from the Federal Emergency Management Agency provided about a couple hundred cases more than was expected. Much of it was frozen, including turkeys.
