WINDHAM — A 26-year-old man died Sunday morning at a Portland hospital from injuries suffered in a car crash on Route 302.
Windham police Sgt. Peter Fulton said Sunday afternoon that police continue to investigate the incident, but it appears that Craig D. McPherson of Portland was headed east on Route 302 just before 8:30 a.m. Sunday when his 2008 Dodge Caliber was struck head-on by a 2014 Subaru Forester driven by 25-year-old Brittney Hersom of Sanford.
Neither car was carrying any passengers. Both drivers were taken to Maine Medical Center, where McPherson later died. Hersom’s condition was not available early Sunday afternoon.
Police had not yet been able to interview Hersom, Fulton said.
“At this point we’re pretty certain that the eastbound driver, Ms. Hersom, went into the opposite lane of travel — I don’t know why — and hit Mr. McPherson head-on,” he said.
No criminal charges have been filed.
Both drivers were wearing safety belts and air bags deployed in both cars, according to Fulton. Police did administer blood alcohol tests, he said.
