TEMPLE — Voters re-elected Raymond Nile to a two-year term as road commissioner Monday at the annual town meeting, Selectman Jean Mitchell said Tuesday. He received 28 votes to Toby Hellgren’s 25.

Selectman Austin Foss was re-elected to a three-year term, He was unopposed.

Approximately 50 residents attended the meeting, which lasted more than two hours.

Voters rejected holding the annual town meeting in September in an effort to change from a Jan. 1 to Dec. 31 fiscal year to a July 1 to June 30 year, she said. Selectmen posed the question to align the annual town meeting, elections and budget with the state, county and school district, she said.

Residents also voted to have the treasurer, tax collector, town clerk and excise tax collector appointed rather than elected, Mitchell said.

Voters also opted to keep a 3 percent discount offered to taxpayers who pay their property tax bills in full within 30 days of billing. The money will come from the layover account, she said.

“Most of the articles went through pretty well,” Mitchell said.

Residents did vote to accept Boyce Park as a gift from John Hodgkins of Yarmouth following much discussion, she said.

Hodgkins offered the town 2.4 acres on Intervale Road. The Temple Tigers youth baseball team has played there since 1957, Hodgkins wrote in a letter to the town.

The only condition was that it be forever known as Boyce Park and be used for recreation.

Mitchell said residents discussed several issues on accepting the property, including liability and possibly postponing a decision. Several people spoke about the town not having anything for the children, she said.

Voters approved a six-month budget. The half-year budget was presented in case voters chose to change to a fiscal year. An additional six-month budget will be put together for a vote at another town meeting, she said.
