PARIS — Police on Monday urged the driver of a vehicle that killed 16-year-old Xavier Fuentes on a remote stretch of Route 117 Saturday night to come forward.

“We’re just pleading with the individual to come forward,” Paris police Sgt. Jeffery Lange said. “Accidents happen, we just need to find out what occurred. The family wants some closure.”

Fuentes, of Turner, was struck by a vehicle at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday on an unlit stretch between a small rest stop and Brett Hill Road. He was wearing all black clothing and would have been hard for a driver to see, Lange said.

And large snowbanks on the side of the road leave little room for someone to walk safely, he said.

Fuentes was at Flagship Cinemas in Oxford with members of his family on Saturday night before he left and apparently began walking home to Turner, Lange said. When members of his family discovered he wasn’t at the theater, they filed a missing person report Saturday night, he said.

The accident occurred about four miles from the cinema.

Fuentes was discovered lying in the middle of the road around 8:30 p.m. Saturday by Heather Buck of Buckfield, Lange said. He was taken to Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway where he was pronounced dead.

Lange said Fuentes was walking toward oncoming traffic.

The state Medical Examiner’s Office intends to conduct an autopsy Tuesday morning, according to Mark Belserene, spokesman from the examiner’s office.

Lange said investigators spent most of Monday following up about a dozen leads received since Sunday afternoon.

Police believe the vehicle that hit Fuentes did not have a plow attached but was large enough to carry one, such as a pickup truck or an SUV, Lange said.

“It has to be at least that high, based on the evidence we collected,” he said.

Officers from Maine State Police and the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office are reconstructing the scene to learn more about what happened.

Police officers from Paris and other local law enforcement conducted a roadblock in the area on Sunday night to interview drivers who may have seen anyone, Lange said.

While there are no suspects, there are two people of interest, Lange said.

Family members are expected to hold a news conference at the home of Fuentes’ mother, Sheila Cole, in the near future, Lange said.

On Sunday, Fuente’s grandmother, Janice Moore, posted an emotional statement about the tragedy on her Facebook page and offered a $1,000 reward for any information about the hit-and-run. Moore later added that another man donated $500 toward the effort.

Another Facebook page, Justice for Xavier Fuentes, gathered more than 600 likes by Monday evening.

Lange said investigators from the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, the Maine State Police and the Norway Police Department are working with Paris police on the case.

Anyone with information or possible leads is asked to call the Paris Police Department at 207-743-7448 or email [email protected].
