FRYEBURG (AP) — Authorities say a pit bull that attacked a 5-year-old boy in Fryeburg this week did not have rabies.

The boy from Brownfield was visiting relatives Tuesday morning when the 7-year-old dog attacked him and bit him multiple times on the face.

The boy had been petting the dog moments before. No adults witnessed what happened.

Because the dog was not current on its rabies vaccinations, it was euthanized and taken to a state lab for testing. Those tests came back negative Wednesday.

The boy continues to recover in a Portland hospital. No names were released.

The family has had the dog since it was a puppy and it had never before exhibited aggressive behavior.
