The public is invited to the Orono Land Trust’s 28th Annual Meeting on Friday, March 28 at the Keith Anderson Community House, 19 Bennoch Road in Orono. A social gathering with refreshments begins at 6:30,p.m. followed at 7 p.m. by a membership meeting and a program. This year’s program features Cheryl Daigle, the Community Liaison/Outreach Coordinator for the Penobscot River Restoration Trust, presenting “From River Rats to Fish Friends: Engaging Community in Fisheries and Habitat Restoration.”

The Penobscot River Restoration Trust, a non-profit organization, is a joint effort between industry; federal, state, and tribal governments; and conservation groups. Cheryl will discuss the Trust’s purpose and progress in its mission to restore native sea-run fish and their habitat on the Penobscot River while balancing the need for hydropower production. The Trust has been instrumental in removing several dams along the river enabling fish to have better access to their habitat, opening new opportunities for recreation and for the Penobscot Indian Nation to exercise its fishing rights, and to maintain or increase hydropower resources.

The Orono Land Trust is an all-volunteer non-profit organization that serves to protect, manage, and preserve portions of the natural environment in Orono and surrounding communities. It strives to balance conservation and development, extend and maintain trail systems connecting natural areas, encourage appreciation of natural habitats and ensure perpetual access to public lands and waters.
