DIXFIELD — A free education presentation, “Suicide Prevention and Awareness,” will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 25, at Dixfield High School Cafeteria, 145 Weld St.

The event is for parents, school staff, businesses, community organizations and other adults.

Free food and refreshments will be served.

The presentation will provide basic information on suicide prevention, local resources including materials and training by the Maine Suicide Prevention Program and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Topics that will be covered are beliefs about suicide, how to talk about suicide, the facts, warning signs and risk factors, basic intervention skills to use with suicidal behavior, resources to help and the aftermath of suicidal behavior.

The presenter, Heather Carter, MA, comes from Washington State where she developed and ran an award-winning program focused on youth suicide prevention within high risk populations.

She has many years of experience working in mental health prior to her work in public health education and really found her passion when she began her work in suicide prevention.
